The Irish War of Independence took place between January 21st 1919 and ended on July 11th 1921 – lasting 2 and a half years. It was a guerrilla conflict fought between the British forces in Ireland, and the Irish Volunteers (also known as the Irish Republican Army / IRA). Guerrilla warfare is a form of irregular warfare in which a small group of combatants, such as paramilitary personnel, armed civilians, or irregulars, use military tactics including ambushes, sabotage, raids, petty warfare, hit-and-run tactics, and mobility to fight a larger and less-mobile traditional army.
Roughly 2,500 people lost their lives during the conflict and it is this war that led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty signed December 6th 1921, forming the Irish Free State from 6th December 1922
