The South African Krugerrand is one of the most desirable gold coins in the world. First struck in 1967, many countries originally banned the imports of Krugerrands during the apartheid years of racial segregation. However, since apartheid was scrapped and Nelson Mandela appointed President of South Africa in 1994, the coin has become a popular symbol of the rainbow nation.  The obverse depicts Paul Kruger, the third President of the South African Republic by the artist Otto Schultz, and the reverse shows a springbok antelope, designed by the sculptor Coert Steynberg.

In 2017, the South African Mint added a unique privy mark to selected Gold Krugerrands to celebrate the coin’s important 50th anniversary year.  The mark pays tribute to its success as an international coin of great distinction.
