The design for this coin is taken from the design of the 4 Escudo coin issued under the reign of King Felipe II in 1556 in Seville, Spain. The current coin also includes the year, 2018. The New Seville Mint, as it was then known, was built in the sixteenth century inside the walled enclosure, between the towers, Torre del Oro and Torre de la Plata, just by the gate, Puerta de Jerez, and the old mint. Designed by architect Juan de Minjares, the building was refurbished by Sebastian Van der Borcht, who added a monumental stone frontispiece. One of the leading Castilian mints, the Seville plant continued to produce coins until 1868.

This is the world's first Gold Commemorative 4 Escudo in history!
