As the first American commemorative struck, the Columbian half holds a special place in the long and historic commemorative series, there is even reason to believe that this coin may be the first commemorative in history.

These coins were due to be sold as part of the 1892 World’s Columbian Exposition and in August 1892 Congress had authorised 5,000,000 of these half dollars to be struck. The Exposition was to be the first of the great World’s Fairs to be honoured with a commemorative coin and is still considered the greatest event of its kind in history.

1892 Issue: The first half dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in November 1892. It is believed that none were melted and 950,000 were struck. They were distributed by the World’s Columbian Exposition and Chicago banks and sold for $1 each.

Any coins that were not destroyed were either kept by their original owners or used as collateral and eventually were placed into circulation, many lost and forgotten about.

The obverse features the bust right of Christopher Columbus. The U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver at the time, Charles E. Barber, based his depiction of Columbus allegedly on a bust made by artist Olin L. Warner. The reverse is a depiction of Columbus’ flag ship Santa Maria poised over two globes created by an Assistant Engraver, George T. Morgan. There was much deliberation over the design and the reverse very nearly contained another barber proposal of the complete western hemisphere before it was overturned by the exposition committee.
