THE VOICE OF THE RISING

Pádraig Pearse stood outside the General Post Office in Dublin, and began reading the Proclamation of the Irish Republic to the expectant masses below.

“IRISHMEN AND IRISHWOMEN,” Pearse declared, “In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.” The rousing address that followed set in motion what became known as the Easter Rising, a week-long rebellion that reignited the fight for a free Ireland.
