The charming silver Half-Dollar was the first coin issued by the U.S Mint that depicted a man who had not served as the President of the United States. It is a mark of the high esteem that founding father Benjamin Franklin is still held in that his face has looked out of the $100 bill since 1914.

Struck in 90% silver, the obverse of the Half-Dollar depicts the portrait profile of Benjamin Franklin with the word "LIBERTY" inscribed over the top.  Below the portrait are the words, "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year of issue.

The reverse depicts the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia together with a small eagle.  It has been suggested that the reason why the eagle appears so small is that Franklin was opposed to the idea of making the bird a national symbol of the United States.  Ever the pragmatist, Franklin favoured the turkey as the national symbol but was outvoted!

In addition to the designs, the reverse also features the traditional motto of the United States, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" ('Out of many, one') together with the issuing country and the denomination.

The U.S. Mint issued the coin for fifteen years before tragedy caused it to be replaced in 1963 with the portrait of John F. Kennedy, who had been slain in Dallas, Texas that November.
