Order The Brussels Hoard 'Long Cross' Sterling Silver Canterbury Penny today for just €415! (Plus €4.95 P&P)

An original coin from the largest hoard of buried coins ever discovered!

In 1908, workmen demolishing an old tavern in the centre of Brussels made an extraordinary discovery beneath the tiled kitchen floor - about 150,000 medieval silver coins.

The coins were buried around 1265AD and more than half were sterling silver pennies. Who brought them to Brussels and why they were buried there remains a mystery.

In 1247, Sterling Silver pennies were issued with a new anti-tampering design to make it easier to detect ‘clipping,' the practice of illegally trimming metal from the edge of the coin. The voided long cross design extended to the edge and revolutionised medieval coinage.

This iconic ‘Long Crosssterling silver penny was struck in Canterbury, which was one of the most important regional mints in England. Coins were produced there from the seventh century up until the sixteenth century, and the site that occupied the mint is called Mint Yard today.

The coin has been independently certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as belonging to the world record-breaking Brussels Hoard.
